First Impressions Start with Your Resume

Five Resume Tips That Could Land You the Job

Your resume is often your first chance to make a good impression with a potential employer. And no, it doesn’t need to be fancy—it just needs to be clear, focused, and easy to read. At Holden Temporaries, we review hundreds of resumes each month. Here are the five things we see that really work:

1. Keep it short and sweet

One page is usually plenty. Use bullet points and keep descriptions concise so employers can scan quickly.

2. Lead with strengths

Put your most recent and relevant experience at the top. If you’re changing careers, highlight transferable skills like reliability, communication, and teamwork.

3. Use action words

Start bullet points with strong verbs. For example, “organized records for 100+ client files” sounds more impressive than “responsible for filing.”

4. Match the job description

If the job calls for forklift certification or typing speed, make sure that’s clearly listed in your resume.

5. Proofread!

Typos can make you seem careless. Read your resume out loud or ask someone else to review it for you.
